ABOUT

About

I am a registered 200 hour Akhanda yoga teacher. For me, yoga started out as a last resort. Throughout my childhood, I was a competitive show jumper, spending hours riding horses.  Later on I became a runner, and enjoyed lifting weights at the gym. Then I abruptly developed chronic fatigue. I struggled with my desire to remain active and healthy when my body was giving out. Yoga was suddenly the only activity that I could do without totally exhausting myself and seriously compromising my health. Over time, yoga became a refuge from the stress and uncertainty in my life. Eventually the cause of my extreme fatigue was diagnosed and treated, however yoga had became an integral part of my life. Once recovered, I jumped back into an active life, teaching fitness classes and found I had a passion for teaching. During this time I continued to practice and became fascinated with the physical aspect of yoga and the role it played in my recovery. In my quest to learn more I started digging into the mental aspect, and began a study of yoga. This lead me to take my teacher training through Prana yoga studio.  Through my journey I developed the desire to teach and share the practice that is steadily changing my life.

AKHANDA YOGA

Akhanda Yoga

Akhanda yoga is a holistic teaching approach. Akhanda means whole, full, infinite, indivisible, or oneness. It emphasizes a balanced practice of asana (postures), Pranayama (breathwork), relaxation, mantra, meditation, and kriya (purification). Asana  is  the practice of yoga postures in a balanced sequence involving moving the spine in all directions, and utilizes all stations such as sitting, crouching, standing, and laying down. Pranayama, or breath work, helps regulate the breath and emotions preparing you for meditation, or helping you maintain steady breathing during asana.  Mantra means liberation of the mind. It helps calm the mind and releases us from patterns we form mentally. Meditation is a deep state of concentration, which slows the breath, heart rate, and brain activity which reduces stress, improves anxiety, and aids in the treatment of depression. All in all, yoga can have a major impact on your life whether you choose to practice just the physical aspect, mental aspect, or dive in and enjoy the whole lifestyle.
